Museum Silkeborg HOVEDGÅRDEN is named after and located in the remaining wing of the former Silkeborg Manor from 1767. This the the oldest building in town (in fact, older than the town). For its construction, much building material was recycled from the ancient castle of Silkeborg. The collections on display at Hovedgården describe aspects of life from antiquity until present day. The prehistoric exhibition has a special focus on the presentation of the Iron Age and the world famous bog bodies of Tollund Man and Elling Woman. The collections of recent history describe the castle of Silkeborg, antique glass and glass manufacture of the Renaissance in this part of the country, local pottery, and the history of Silkeborg, a town founded in the middle of the 19th century; also on display is a fully furnished Victorian sitting room. A working class home from the beginning of the 20th century is displayed in a small house next to the museum, ask for the key at the receptionist's desk.
